150 Kilometres north of Cape Town, on South Africa’s West Coast, you find Paternoster. Paternoster, an idyllic town with whitewashed houses, gorgeous beaches, fabulous restaurants, pretty galleries and shops, is home to a population of less than 2,000 residents. Locals who have been fishing on the coast for generations make their living from fishing still.

Some believe Paternoster means 'our father'. Surviving shipwrecked sailors sent grateful prayers and hence the believe the town is named after these prayers. Others say it is named after beads, or even after a location in England. Only one thing is for sure, the name debate is ongoing. Paternoster remains a traditional South African fishing village, and its irresistible bare-footed charm is strong. The quiet Cape West Coast town turns bustling holiday destination in the summer months, all the way into autumn, and on long weekends.

A coastal escape for much-needed R&R

Do you need to be hugged? Are you looking for a coastal escape to get some much-needed rest and relaxation to keep your mental and physical health in check? If you are a fan of stylish, ecologically minded, and owner-run guesthouses and are looking for a place like that near Cape Town, then Gonana Guesthouse in Paternoster is just the place for you as it provides all that and gracious hospitality. Its location between Paternoster and Columbine Nature Reserve, perched smack bang on Bekbaai beach, is second to none. It is not only the location that is this close to nature, Gonana treads lightly on earth and uses solar panels, rainwater collection, and greywater recycling to be run self-sufficient.

Swedish entrepreneur and interior designer Jonas Sandström chose Gonana as the name for his beachy boutique guesthouse as it means 'Embrace' in isiZulu.

As you enter Gonana, you walk past the saltwater swimming pool and through the inner courtyard garden planted with indigenous plants, and straight on into the main house. On arrival, you will be welcomed with a warm smile and an ice-cold drink of Rooibos tea.

Embrace the Cape West Coast bliss at Gonana

The design of the spacious ground floor room, one of eight guest rooms, with whitewashed walls and timber ceilings, polished concrete floors, linens and blonde wood furniture, treetrunk nightstands, rustic grass rugs, a wicker chair, and industrial-style wardrobe and bathroom, creates a joyful and happy atmosphere through and through. Doors and windows allow for lots of natural light and invite relaxation. I love that there is no TV in the room, hand on heart, who needs one when the view over the dunes and the ocean is this marvellous?

Before you go to bed make your way up to the first floor and get a front-row seat on the wooden deck for a show of a little stargazing extravaganza, it is free, and the starry night sky is grand since there is hardly any light pollution. The show is best on cloudless nights.

In the morning, after an angelic peaceful sleep in the large comfy bed, you look out the window and just see blue and hear the waves rolling onto the sandy shore. It feels like walking on clouds. Walk from your room a few steps, I counted, and it is 32 steps. Gonana’s garden grows seamlessly into the dune belt, and you are on the beach with powder-soft sand on the shore of the deep blue South Atlantic Ocean. Gonana is indeed the perfect place to leave footprints in the sand, and that before you even had breakfast. Nothing is as enjoyable as sand between your toes and the soothing sound of the ocean. Heaven is a place on earth.

After your first beach walk of the day head up to the first floor. Guests can feast on an expansive breakfast at the giant wooden table in the upstairs communal living room with a million-dollar view over the Atlantic Ocean. Gonana uses foremost organic and only locally sourced products, and you have to try Gonana's bread and jam and agree that homemade tastes best. Gonana is a guesthouse by the sea that cares for their shoreline – the use of plastic is kept to a minimum.

Being at the ocean, it is another world. After breakfast, as I stay on Gonana's upstairs wooden deck soaking up the views of the endless blue sea I think once more that spending time in nature is a divine experience. And that in a place like Gonana. It is a simple, beachy, environmentally friendly, and timeless place, and the happiness that comes with staying here is priceless.

Before you leave, you can buy locally made and sustainable products whereby all stocked beauty products are not tested on animals and are paraben-free.

What else is there to do in Paternoster?

Gonana Guesthouse is only a few steps from the beach, so it is in an ideal position for beach picnics, yoga, photography, and beach walks. Bring binoculars for bird watching or see whether you can spot dolphins and whales (be patient, but chances for sightings are high). You can also arrange to go horse riding and kayaking.

To reach the centre of Paternoster it is a walk of only about ten minutes, and you only need about five minutes to reach the waterfront district with shops, galleries, cafés, and restaurants. I recommend you go by car after dark. If you are unsure, best to ask at Gonana.

Please go and visit Zelda Designs, one can’t but love Zelda Furstenberg’s artwork and sustainable fashion.

Paternoster is home to several restaurants, and they are hugely popular. To avoid disappointment, it is best to book in advance. I recommend Gaaitjie Restaurant, great for vegetarians, and housed in a Cape Heritage building 'on the rocks' directly on the beach. It has lovely ocean views and the most romantic sunset. Another wonderful option for vegetarians would be One Kreeftegang. For coffee and cake head to Koekemakranke Coffee Shop – they brew delectable red cappuccinos.

Would I stay at Gonana Guesthouse again in the future? Yes. Would I recommend a stay at Gonana Guesthouse to a friend? Yes. Paternoster is a great long weekend destination for families and couples – two weeks in Paternoster - that sounds blissful too. I recommend longer for those looking to slow down and truly unwind. In one of the oldest, iconic, and most beautiful seaside fishing villages on the West Coast, Paternoster, you will find Gonana Guest House near the beach in Bekbaai.

Gonana Guest House is a virtually off-the-grid guest house that is completely environmentally ethical and practices what they preach on daily basis to make sure they take care of the environment.

But first, let me tell you a little bit about Paternoster. Paternoster is a small, quaint, and picturesque seaside fishing village situated about 150km from Cape Town and 15km from Vredenburg on the West Coast. Nestled between Saldanha Bay and St Helena Bay, Paternoster is now a sought-after tourist destination known for its remarkable coastline of jagged cliffs and white boulders, traditional white-washed fishermen's cottages, warm-hearted people, fresh seafood, scattered old colourful fishing boats, bustling art scene, unspoiled white sandy beach, and amazing sunsets, and sunrises.

Did you know Paternoster (Pater noster) means "Our Father, in Latin? This name is believed to have been taken from the sincere prayer said by Catholic Portuguese seamen when they became shipwrecked near a small fishing town we all know today as Paternoster. Other people believe it refers to the beads that the Khoi tribe wore that were called Paternosters. But which one is correct? In my opinion, they are both correct, and let me explain the connection between the two.

In Western Europe, a string of prayer beads was first called "Paternosters". The name refers to the prayer most often used with it, which begins with the words "Our Father, who art in heaven" (in Latin, "Pater noster, qui es in caelis"). Whether you believe the name Paternoster refers to the prayer said by Catholic Portuguese seamen when they became shipwrecked near this village or Paternoster beads worn by the Khoi tribe, you will still be correct.

Gonana Guest House is perfectly built near the white sandy beach in Bekbaai. Gonana Guest House is a virtually off-the-grid guest house that is completely environmentally ethical, and they practice what they preach on daily basis to make sure they take care of the environment. All water used in the guest house is recycled and used in the toilets. All bathrooms have showers only and are fitted with water-saving showerheads to save water. Rainwater is also harvested and stored in collection tanks, to be used for maintaining the water-wise indigenous gardens and to top up the solar-heated swimming pool.

That is not all they do! The owner, Jonas Sandström, a Swedish entrepreneur who came to South Africa over twenty years ago, understands that electricity is a scarce and unpredictable commodity in South Africa so he made sure that all power around the guest house is solar-generated including geysers. Only the stove in the kitchen used by the guest house staff to prepare daily breakfast for guests uses gas. This means you are guaranteed power even during "load-shedding" (temporary power cut) periods. Furniture in the bedrooms was crafted from alien pine by local hands, blankets and towels were handwoven in nearby Barrydale.

Jonas' motto is "Think global, buy local" and he walks the talk. All bathroom amenities are all-natural and locally produced. Gonana Guest House also recycles paper, plastic, glass, and metal.

Living in the city can sometimes make a person feel like they are trapped in a rat race but to keep my body energised, my spirit happy and my brain creative, I take regular road trips to secluded villages around the Western Cape. This past week my destination was Paternoster, one of my favourite seaside villages on the West Coast.

When I arrived at the guest house I was welcomed by the ever smiling and friendly Thandi. Thandi manages the day-to-day operations of the guest house including preparing breakfast for guests in the morning. The weather was perfect and remained the same the entire time I was there. 25 - 30 degrees to be exact, but the polished concrete foors made my room feel cooler.

The guest house's organic minimalist interior design with a Scandinavian touch brings the outside into the well-sized rooms. A comfortable mattress and high-quality sheets made me feel like I was sleeping in my own cloud every night.

Gonana Guest House is built perfectly next to the beach and that made it convenient for me every time I wanted to go to the beach for my morning walks or sunset walks.

The Bay is on the Atlantic Ocean side and that means the water is chilly, so I only dipped my toes. This part of Paternoster is not popular and that makes Gonana Guest House feel like it has its own private beach just a few steps from the small gate because there are always few people at the beach. Originally a family home called "Whalesong", this house has been completely transformed into a cosy home away from home with unrestricted views of the ocean to be enjoyed by anyone who wants to escape the city buzz and experience seaside living.

All sea-facing rooms were fully occupied when I booked and I had to settle for an en-suite Queen room on the ground floor with a sea view only from its terrace. The bed had an extra-long, wide, and comfortable mattress. A working station, digital safe, heater, standing fan, hairdryer, extra blanket, and high speed Wi-Fi are standard in all the rooms.

After two nights I extended my stay with an extra night and was moved to a triple room on the top floor. Sea-facing rooms were stil occupied. The triple room has a balcony with a table and chairs overlooking the swimming pool, Queen size bed, and a chill couch. Each of the eight rooms (six double rooms, one triple room, and one studio apartment) has been carefully designed to promote a sense of calm, tranquillity, and comfort. Seven rooms have their own private outdoor sitting areas, perfect for morning coffee or sundowners.

One area that stole my heart is the lounge on the top floor and this is where I spent most of my time reading books provided by the guest house, playing board games, cards, taking pictures, watching sunsets, and just relaxing.

This enormous and well-decorated lounge overlooking the sea has high white ceilings, skylights, huge sliding doors, an old wooden communal breakfast table that belonged to the previous owner, a cosy fireplace, and a long balcony ideal for whale watching (in season), watching magical sunsets, and having sundowners.

This lounge area is used for breakfast and this is also where the honesty bar is. Ocean views from this lounge and the sound of waves crashing on the shoreline allow you to think and be creative.

With its helpful and friendly staff members, the owner, Jonas Sandström, and the natural décor inspired by the natural surroundings, Gonana Guest House is the perfect escape for those looking to reset, re-energise and enjoy a wonderful seaside living experience.

There are no TV's at the guest house and this makes it easier to disconnect from the outside world and to relax. Please note that children under the age of 12 years are not allowed and only one room (apartment), is a self-catering unit.

WHERE I ATE LUNCH AND DINNER

Your booking at Gonana Guest House includes a daily breakfast. For lunch and dinner, I went to Voorstrandt Restaurant for fish and chips, Gaaitjie Restaurant for a tuna dish, Leeto Restaurant for prawns, and De See Kat Restaurant for sushi.

The village has a good variety of restaurants and bars. Thandi from Gonana Guest House was very helpful with recommendations and made reservations for me every day.

All are highly recommended but never leave the area without eating at Leeto Restaurant. Booking a table in time is recommended at these restaurants because they are always full. Other popular local restaurants in the area are Wolfgat but you need to reserve seating months in advance because it can only accommodate 20 guests and it's known internationally. They offer a unique dining experience showcasing a selection of indigenous ingredients specific to the West Coast coastal locations, Noisy Oyster for seafood, and The Hobnobbery for coffee, cakes, and light bites.

WHERE I WENT TO FOR DRINKS

l used the honesty bar at Gonana Guest House.

If you do not know what an honesty bar is, it's a bar at an establishment that doesn't have a barman or lady. You take alcohol from the bar, write down the items you took and settle your bill on your check-out day. There are plenty of bars on the main road and most restaurants sell alcoholic beverages too.

1. VISIT CAPE COLUMBINE NATURE RESERVE

Only 4km from Paternoster is Cape Columbine, a nature reserve that boasts one of the last manned lighthouses (built 1936) in South Africa. If you continue driving past the lighthouse, you will arrive at the popular Tietiesbaai lagoon which has many picnic spots and an overnight camping area.

Gonana certainly rolls nicely off the tongue. Yet, for Swedish owner and interior designer Jonas Sandström, Gonana wasn’t just a name for his properties in Paternoster but rather a way of life. If you’re one of our isiZulu readers, you’d know that Gonana means ‘to embrace’; and embracing nature is what this collection has done, being Paternoster’s first-ever sustainable guesthouse and self-catering properties.

Jonas has seamlessly blended African elements with his Scandi heritage, creating properties that pay homage to their fishing village roots but with modern clean lines and rich textures.

Almost every piece of furniture has been lovingly made by the hands of local artisans and raw indigenous materials are used wherever possible. Each property is also fully solar-powered, meaning more holidays and fewer interruptions – bliss!

In total, Gonana Collection comprises seven properties, all located on the quieter side of Paternoster, known as Bekbaai (Bek Bay), which neighbours the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, the place for miles of protected beaches, along with Cape Columbine lighthouse, built in 1936 on Castle Rock, making it the last manned lighthouse in South Africa.

And if you’re wondering what all the Paternoster fuss is about, take a 1.5-hour drive from Cape Town up the West Coast to see the whales frolicking in the bay from August, or experience the ‘Secret Season’ from May – our favourite time of year!

This is when the town quietens down, you can dine without reservations, and very often enjoy summer-like days and cooler evenings.

But where to stay, you ask?

Gonana Guesthouse

Introducing Gonana Guesthouse, perched on a small dune closest to the Nature Reserve and directly on the beach, with a rehabilitated green belt running alongside. Here, you embrace eco-conscious design without compromising on the experience – yes, it’s possible!

Every morning breakfast is served around the driftwood communal dining table, which has a story of its own – as do most pieces here. This centrepiece belonged to the previous owner and is the centre of new friendships and conversations.

Guests enjoy breakfasts with locally sourced produce and bread baked overnight along with morning muffins, so if you’re planning on sticking to your carb-free diet, you may want to embrace your curves.

The guesthouse comprises seven en-suite rooms and a small self-catering apartment at the entrance. There is a saltwater solar-heated pool that really has been ‘built for the gram’ with an outdoor shower to wash the beach off your feet.

Due to the guesthouse being a place for couples or families travelling with older children (over 12 years only), there are other properties in the collection for those wanting ‘in’ on the collection that offer a similar aesthetic and experience, sans the daily breakfast.

Acacia and Aloe House

Just a 2-minute walk up the road from the guesthouse lies Acacia House (two-bedroom) and Aloe House (one-bedroom). While not located directly on the beach, both properties enjoy spectacular views over the ocean, with balconies soaking up the afternoon sunsets – talk about a braai with a backdrop!

Both properties are child- and pet-friendly, come with fully equipped kitchens and are serviced daily (as are all the properties), so there’s no need to lift a finger after enjoying a dinner at ‘home.’

There are also indoor fireplaces next to the couches, so bring that book you’ve been threatening to read since January – it’s the season for comfort and lazing, after all!

Coral Villa

At the end of 2022, Gonana added Coral Villa to the collection after restoring and renovating the oldest fisherman’s cottage in Bekbaai. So if you’re looking for an authentic West Coast fisherman’s cottage experience, then Coral Villa is the ‘plek’ for you!

It has been created for family and friends, with a huge indoor fireplace and long table begging for fireside chats, games of Scrabble and red wine. The property sleeps up to 8 guests and, like the houses, is child- and pet-friendly too.

There is an outdoor braai and front stoep that look out over the indigenous fynbos garden towards the ocean, 60 metres away, providing the perfect waves-crashing soundtrack to your evenings.

The Studios

Behind Coral Villa are three studios, which can be booked along with the older cottage if you’re blessed with an extended family. But if you’re keen on solo travel or treating your ‘better half’ to a breakaway, then the studios may pique your fancy.

They’re also located a few hundred metres from the local theatre, which hosts many artists and is a firm favourite for locals and tourists.

If you’d prefer to eat in, you’ll be pleased to know that the studios each come complete with a kitchenette, gas stove and mini fridge. You’ll also get to sleep on extra-length orthopaedic mattresses (like all the other properties) and there’s a daybed that can sleep a child. There is also an undercover braai area overlooking the communal indigenous garden.

But Why Paternoster?

To the Catholic Portuguese seamen shipwrecked along South Africa’s West Coast, ‘Paternoster’ formed part of their prayers and cries, meaning ‘Our Father’ in Latin. While for the Khoi tribe, it is believed that Paternoster referred to the beads that they wore called ‘Paternosters.’

But once you stay at Gonana, you’ll realise that the true definition of Paternoster is a place to practice self-reflection and mindfulness and experience a date with nature, whether its taking a stroll to the restaurants up the road or exploring open beaches with e-bikes or on horseback. Your footprints here are the only things you leave behind when staying at the Gonana Collection.

Swedish owner and entrepreneur, Jonas Sandström, envisioned a sustainable Afro-Scandi haven — a space for individuals to reconnect with themselves, each other, and the planet. This dream materialised with the inception of the Gonana Guesthouse in Paternoster a few years ago. Now, a chic collection of villas and studios have joined the Gonana fold. I spent a weekend at the collection's Coral Villa which is the perfect embodiment of Jonas' vision and provides an idyllic retreat that speaks to the essence of reconnection.

Taking inspiration from the landscape, the people, and the light in the charming West Coast village, the additional rental properties are within walking distance of Gonand Guest House - where I've stayed a couple of times, and which remains the hub for check-in and contact. Coral Villa is the oldest fisherman villa on the Bekbaai side of Paternoster and has been completely re-imagined, renovated and refurbished with sustainability and Gonana's style in mind.

The three en-suite bedroomed villa has a spacious communal lounge with an open fireplace and dining area, a fully equipped kitchen with gas hob and bathrooms that feature walk-in showers. Its garden, with a bradi area and an outside breakfast area, faces the beautiful fynbos garden and allows glimpses of the Bekbaai beach just 60 metres away.

Many considered touches do the setting and historic structure justice, with Cape cottage furniture, double-volume living and locally crafted baskets, art and glass among the design touches. Quality linen and plush fabrics add to the comfort. Plus the cottage is pet-friendly so your four-legged besties can go too, mine were welcomed with beds, bowls and treats.

The barren beauty of Paternoster's is especially good for walking and is a place where escapism can be mastered. The weekend with my mother and daughter and dogs was such a treat and really warmed my heart. Under 2 hours from home, the breakaway felt like a much-deserved holiday. It was a cold and rainy Friday afternoon in Cape Town when we excitedly packed our bags and made our way to the small fisherman village of Paternoster – the epitome of slow living.

We arrived at Gonana Guesthouse, a member of Cape Country Routes, where we were greeted – in true West Coast style – by friendly staff who checked us in and helped us get settled. It was a brief, refreshing walk from the main guesthouse to our unit, Coral Villa, just up the road (there is parking at the villa, but some of us chose to walk and our designated driver brought our car).

We loved taking the short walk to the main guesthouse and back.

En route you’ll get a glimpse of Bek Bay, a mere stone’s throw away, with numerous little paths leading you straight to the beach.

The villa, recently renovated and refurbished, is spacious and the furnishings (all sourced locally) are reminiscent of quintessential laid-back living. It consists of three bedrooms: two upstairs with en-suite bathrooms and one downstairs with a separate bath and shower.

The rooms are furnished beautifully.

There’s a communal lounge with an open fireplace and a large dining room table – perfect for those nights kuiering around the fire while having dinner with friends and family. Coral Villa, being self-catering, also has a fully equipped kitchen with a gas hob and all the essentials you may need to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Even though winter is in full swing, we spent most of our time outside on the stoep, basking in the winter sun. The stoep overlooks a small fynbos garden, from where you’ll also get glimpses of Bek Bay. The braai area is located in the garden, so stoep kuiers were, of course, the order of the day.

We took leisurely strolls to the beach and watched the hues of orange and pink erupt on the horizon – there is nothing quite like a West Coast sunset! With the golden rays caressing our faces, we sat on the sand, immersing ourselves in every moment, counting ourselves so incredibly blessed to be there.

We had breakfast at the main guesthouse, where we enjoyed a wholesome and hearty meal, served Scandinavian style. The dining area opens up to an outside eating area that overlooks the ocean.

With full bellies and happy hearts, we bid Gonana and Paternoster farewell at the end of our stay. And as we walked back to our villa for the last time on Sunday, on a misty morning with the ocean raging, we vowed to each other that we’d be back again soon.

More about the Gonana Collection

Gonana Guesthouse – Gonana Collection’s flagship property is located on the Bek Bay beach alongside a greenbelt. Both the two-bedroom, four-sleeper Acacia House and the one-bedroom, three-sleeper Aloe House have fully equipped kitchens, a dining area, patios/balconies with sea views and braai facilities on their covered verandahs, allowing for year-round enjoyment.

Gonana Coral Villa – the oldest fisherman villa at the quieter Bek Bay side of Paternoster has been renovated and refurbished. It features two en-suite bedrooms and one bedroom with a separate bathroom, a large communal lounge with open fireplace and dining area, bathrooms with walk-in showers and solar geysers and a fully equipped kitchen with gas hob. Its own garden – with a braai area and an outside breakfast area – faces onto an indigenous fynbos garden.

Gonana Studios – three separate studios: The Scallop, The Oyster and The Mussel are situated in the garden. Each studio sleeps three (queen-size bed plus sleeper couch). All bathrooms feature a walk-in shower and solar geysers and the fully equipped kitchenettes feature gas hobs. The front porches (with a built-in braai) of the two ground floor studios face the indigenous fynbos garden. Each also has a secluded back porch with dining facilities. The Scallop has a private terrace with built-in braai and dining table.

WINTER ON THE WEST COAST

ALOE HOUSE

We booked Aloe House, a one-bedroomed unit just a stone’s throw from the beach and the main guesthouse. The contemporary Afro-Scandi decor blends local flavour with the owner’s Swedish heritage, and together this results in a stylish palette of natural tones and textures. The look is hygge minimalism, with thoughtful comfort at every turn.

We loved the soothing hues, the chic accents and the fact that everything has been thought of with both functionality and luxury in mind. From electric blankets that warmed up the bed to just the right level of toastiness to comfy robes and soft mohair blankets to cuddle under.

AN ECO-WISE GETAWAY

The collection is guided by environmentally conscious principles, which was an important consideration when developing in a heritage community such as Paternoster. Solar electricity heats the saltwater pool and runs the properties – the absence of loadshedding was a very welcome change.

All bathroom beauty products are local and paraben-free and bottles are refilled instead of being replaced. The honesty bar stocks no plastic, strict recycling is in place, rainwater is harvested and grey water is used where possible. These are just a few of the many eco-conscious practices in place.

PET-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION AT GONANA

As dog lovers, we’ve always felt a pang of guilt when leaving our furry friends behind while we venture off to explore new destinations. The fact that Gonana offers pet-friendly accommodation in its Apartment, Houses, Villa and Studios allowed us to have a fun family getaway, with our two Boston Terriers along for the adventure. Gonana was the recipient of the Afristay Pet-Friendly Destination 2022 Award, so as well as being great for humans, it’s fabulous for your four-legged friends as well.

Gonana kindly catered to our boys with a comfy bed each, which they sniffed and investigated at length, as well as a tasty bag of treats on arrival. Pets can be a tad unsettled in new environments, but as soon as they found their spots in front of the fireplace, there was no further convincing needed!

COSY COMFORT

The self-catering units at Gonana have been stocked very thoughtfully; from a well-equipped kitchen with everything you need to prepare light meals, to the inclusion of basics like olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. There is also an honesty bar with wine, soft drinks, local gins and snacks, which was a welcome addition to a self-catering space.

The real clincher for us though was the fabulous indoor fireplace. It just gives the unit a different charm and it becomes the perfect place to embrace cosy moments catching up or indulging in the simple pleasure of a good book.

The guesthouse sells wood, firelighters and matches, so you can get started as soon as you arrive. We got the fire going as soon as we set foot in the door and had it pretty much going during our entire stay, warming the unit and making it hard to leave!

GONANA GUESTHOUSE

Gonana Guesthouse itself is located directly on the beach at Bekbaai and you can walk out of your room and pretty much directly onto the beach. We took gaps in the storming weather to walk down from Aloe House to take the dogs for walks along this unspoilt stretch of beach, which borders the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve.

There is a stillness and remoteness to West Coast beaches that is unparalleled and, during stormy weather, the beauty is elevated almost to eerily ethereal levels.

At Gonana Guesthouse you can also enjoy a gorgeous breakfast spread, which you can book for at R150 pp if you are self-catering. The team at the guesthouse lay out a fabulous spread in a communal dining space that includes yoghurts and cereals, fresh bread and baked goods, a hot breakfast selection and excellent coffee.

BE EMBRACED AT GONANA

The overarching feeling we got from the Gonana collection is that it knows the idyllic space that it occupies. There is no need for pomp and circumstance, it is thoroughly comfortable knowing the serene beauty and the warm hospitality it offers.

Being that Aloe House is so well equipped and the fireplace so alluring, we didn’t feel the need to do much other than a few walks on the beach, and I can’t think of a weekend away that has been quite as unencumbered and restorative.

Paternoster itself, with its untouched beaches and unhurried pace, is a place that nurtures the soul and rejuvenates the spirit. Here, the rhythm of life follows the ebb and flow of the tides, creating a sense of harmony that is both comforting and revitalising. Gonana, which means ‘to embrace’, thoroughly lives up to this name – a stay here is like a warm hug for your soul.

When creating each room, Jonas was eco-conscious in each of his design decisions. He always considered what the impact of each piece would be on the environment, which is why our rooms are luxurious in the sense of space and quality of products, yet minimalistic and reflective of the coastline and way of life here in Paternoster.

For example in each one of our guestrooms, you’ll notice the hooks made in historic Woodstock, Cape Town, and which proudly hold the softest towels. However, these aren’t just any towels; they have a story too, something that shouldn’t surprise you now that you know about our dear Jonas!

Barrydale Hand Weavers has its roots along the famed Route 62, where Barrydale is located between the barren Klein Karoo and Overberg regions of the Western Cape. For the owners of this local establishment, the journey to realising it was “born of an intentional decision to slow down” – something that certainly mirrors the ethos of why our Jonas chose to leave behind his lifestyle in Sweden and opt for West Coast living.

We find that not only are Barrydale Hand Weaves’ towels the softest we’ve ever felt, but they also perfectly compliment the natural hues and colour palates of our rooms. When designing every single room, Jonas merged the West Coast aesthetic along with Scandinavian design, creating spaces that are incredibly calming, considered in every design element, and kindest to the environment. Oh Darling, It’s Time to Get a Taste of the West Coast

In keeping with our ethos of buying local, thinking global, we’ve taken the ‘local is lekker’ South Africanism and supported it by sourcing local organic cheeses and fresh produce from the well-known Moose “On the Run” shop in Hopefield. Our beers are also West Coast favourites, with Darling Brew and Paternoster Brewery as our proud suppliers. ECO-FRIENDLY AND OFF THE GRID

Gonana ensures that whatever time of the year you choose to travel, you will be romanced. The property is located on the Bekbaai beach alongside a greenbelt and, taking full advantage of this pristine environment, it’s been designed to be off the grid and completely eco-friendly. The water is recycled, power is solar generated, plastic usage is minimal, it’s chemical free, the gardens are indigenous and water wise, and the decor is all-natural and sourced locally.

Gonana is Swedish entrepreneur and interior designer Jonas Sandström’s third guest house in the Cape. He renovated the small eight-room house, extending it to include a swimming pool, large sash windows, and an expansive veranda on the first floor for incredible views of the ocean and sunsets.

PAIRED-DOWN LUXURY

The name Gonana is derived from the Zulu word ‘embrace’, and here you will be enfolded in pared-down, comforting luxury. Think neutral palettes that calm and restore, private terraces and balconies, soft Swedish sheepskins, a large entertaining-style dining table, skylights and big windows to appreciate the light and vistas, leather couches and woven leather chairs, and a cosy fireplace that beckons.

There are eight en-suite guest rooms, seven of which have private terraces or balconies, and three of which lead directly to the beach. The upstairs room, which sleeps three, has its own private balcony. The main balcony, with its comfy cushions and incredible views of sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean, is the spot to be if you’re in the mood for quiet time.

Just under two hours away on a coast-hugging road where the city’s roar is politely left behind, lies the little paradise of Paternoster, and a darling guesthouse that has a refreshing, eco-friendly take on life.

I will unapologetically admit that I quickly developed a crush on the old fishing town where I stayed at Gonana Guesthouse, ‘gonana‘ being a Zulu word that translates to ‘embrace’ – an apt name for a place that welcomes its guest with wide open arms and warm smiles.

From solar-powered hot water showers that will wash away your city sins, to the overall ambient energy of kindness to the planet, the recently renovated abode should receive a boatload of organic brownie points for captivating the owner Jonas Sandstrom’s ethical imaginings in eco-luxury.

Gonana is completely plastic-free, taking a huge step toward minimising waste and encouraging a kinder approach to the environment. The interiors and bathroom supplies are all locally produced and all the guest house staff is from the Paternoster area. ‘Grey water reticulation systems, rainwater collection tanks, water-saving showers as well as a robust recycling ethos makes this an eco-friendly and almost self-sufficient guest house, well in line with modern trends of sustainability,’ the website states. ‘We are proud to have created a space that is as friendly to its environment as it is to its guests.’

Now, while you might be on a sustainability adventure, you’ve also got other adventurous temptations to look forward to in Paternoster.

Smooth walks through the town will have you wondering if you accidentally stepped onto the set of Mama Mia as you wander through quaint white and blue houses. The unpolluted ocean air will be your fabulous companion, and you’re destined to find treasures in the people and quirky curiosities of the town. An engineer-turned-toymaker whose workshop has all the vintage toys you could ever want, a kilt-rocking Scott whose waffles at the Whale Ribs Waffle Warf will have you drooling, and at night, a tribe of stars in the clearest skies that will have you sighing in awe.

If you want to kick it up a notch, there’s plenty of ways to get active. Now, for those who aren’t exactly candidates for the Cape Argus such as myself, the e-bikes from WOW e-bikes will turn any ride into a smooth sail. Even I was able to travel 32.2km through beach valleys and fynbos-covered hills, where you can cruise along the shore as your tyres and weave through a kaleidoscope of wildflowers.

Pro-tip: if you happen to get so distracted by the visions that you fall off your bike, the WOW e-bikes staff are legends and will help you back up immediately with a laugh and a knowing smile, tried and tested!

If you’re peering beyond a land-loving adventure to an ocean outing, Kayak Paternoster will guide you through deep turquoise waters where you can spot whales leisurely gazing at you if you’re very lucky.

As for the foodies, Paternoster is home to an array of wonderful restaurants. Enjoy a front-row seat at the foot of the ocean for a delicious lunch or dinner at Voorstrand Restaurant where the sea will be your evening entertainment, waves crashing all night long.

Or, treat yourself to a five-star experience at the Leeto Restaurant. The menu is serving up sustainability, from the tastiest vegan options to their scrumptious seafood delicacies. I still think about their seafood pasta at least three times a day, and would happily make a trip to Paternoster for that dish alone.
